Many Christians react negatively to the word "theology," believing that it involves dry, fruitless debates about minute points of doctrine. I see it quite differently. I believe that everyone is a theologian. Why? Because any time we think about a teaching in the Bible, we are engaging in theology. Systematic theology is simply the historic, time-tested method of topically organizing the key themes of the Bible into a coherent framework.
The "Man, Sin, Salvation" online class is the second in a sequence of three courses designed to introduce students into the classical categories of systematic theology and to demonstrate practical connections between theology and real life. This is a theology class for regular people, designed to help you disciple your children and lead your small group with more confidence and clarity. Note: You do not need to have taken the first course in order to take this course.
THE FINE PRINT:
This is a real class! It's NOT a book discussion group. I am looking for 35 students who are serious about finishing what we start. Students will prepare for each week's class by doing approx. 3-4 hours of homework, such as reading and watching lecture content. Our in-class time will be on Zoom and will consist of both large group discussions and breakout room discussions to help you process what you are learning.
What to expect:
– 10 weeks
– Meetings: Tuesdays at 4 PM (PT)/7 PM (ET) via Zoom; approx. 2 hours per week
– Dates: April 26 to July 5 (We will be off June 14.)
– Homework: approx. 3-4 hours per week
– Must have the ability to sit in class and be attentive, with your camera on in order to facilitate full participation
Textbooks:
– Bible Doctrine, by Wayne Grudem (This book will be used in all three courses. It is an abridged version of Grudem’s larger text, Systematic Theology. You can purchase either one. They follow the same topic order. For this class, we will read chapters 11-24 of the abridged version. I strongly recommend purchasing the physical copy so you can mark it up.)
– Charts of Christian Theology & Doctrine, by H. Wayne House
– Handbook of Basic Bible Texts, by John Jefferson Davis
– The Bible (ESV, NASB, or NIV recommended)
Registration:
– Tuition: $175; includes weekly lectures, live meetings + recordings of class sessions for personal review
– Class size is limited to 35 students, in order to facilitate discussion. First come, first served.
